Where Does Your Beef Come From? A Look Inside Royal Ranch

Knowing where your food comes from matters. When it comes to beef, we believe families should be able to ask questions and get straight answers—not just about the cut of meat in the package, but about the farm, the animals, and the people behind it.

Where was the animal raised? What was it fed? Where was it processed? And who stands behind the product?

At Royal Family Farming, those questions are a big part of why we share our farm and the way we work. Based in Royal City, Washington, our family farming operation brings together cattle, dairy, crops, orchards, and soil as part of a larger agricultural system. Through Royal Ranch, we offer Washington-raised beef with an emphasis on responsible farming, transparency, and quality our customers can feel good about bringing home.

What Does Local Beef Mean to Us?

“Local” can mean different things depending on where you live and how food is marketed. For us, it means being specific about where our beef comes from and how it is raised, rather than simply putting the word local on a package. Our cattle are raised in Washington, with pasture throughout our region.

When it comes time for processing, our beef goes to Royal Pack, a federally inspected meat-processing facility in Basin City, Washington. Having a connection to the processing side of the business is important to us. It allows us to stay connected to another part of the food chain and gives our customers a clearer picture of where their beef comes from.We believe purchasing local goods should mean more than recognizing a name or a logo. It should mean having an opportunity to learn about the farm and ask questions about the food you're bringing home.

What Do Our Cattle Eat?

Our cattle graze on grass, but we don't describe our standard Royal Ranch beef as 100% grass-fed because their diet also includes a carefully formulated ration made with crops, grains, and other feed ingredients, including crops grown within our family's farming system.

We work with an animal nutritionist to develop diets around the cattle's nutritional needs, with their comfort, growth, and overall well-being in mind.

The connection between crops and cattle is also an important part of the way we farm. Our fields can produce food for people as well as feed for animals. Cattle turn that feed into beef, while manure and other organic materials can return nutrients to the soil.

Rather than treating cattle, crops, and soil as completely separate parts of the farm, we're continually working to understand how they can support one another. It's one way we think about making the most of the resources we have and be thoughtful about them.

Some food for thought…

Is Royal Ranch Beef USDA Inspected?

Yes. Royal Ranch beef is processed at Royal Pack, a federally inspected cattle slaughter and meat-processing facility in central Washington. Federal inspection provides oversight related to meat safety, wholesomeness, and labeling. It's an important part of the process that beef meets the applicable federal requirements.
For us, having a processing facility nearby also means maintaining a connection to another important step between raising cattle and getting beef to our customers. We want people to feel comfortable asking questions about that process, just as they would about how the animals are raised or what they eat.

Is Royal Ranch Beef Grass-Fed?

Our cattle graze on grass, but their diet isn't limited exclusively to grass. We think that distinction matters because terms such as “grass-fed,” “pasture-raised,” and “grain-finished” can be confusing when you see them on a package. They describe different aspects of how cattle are raised and fed, and they don't always tell the whole story on their own. Our approach combines grazing with a formulated diet designed around cattle nutrition and the feed resources available within our farming system. We believe it's more helpful to explain what our cattle actually eat than to rely on a label to tell the whole story. For us, transparency means being clear about our practices so customers can make informed choices about the beef they buy.

Does Local Beef Taste Different?

At the end of the day, farming practices still have to produce something people enjoy eating. Quality matters, and that includes what's on the plate. Our approach to genetics, animal nutrition, and finishing is designed with beef quality in mind, including the marbling and flavor our customers expect from Royal Ranch. Our beef is also dry-aged before reaching customers.Whether you're picking up ground beef for Tuesday-night tacos, planning a family dinner, or saving ribeyes and filet mignon for a special occasion, we believe the eating experience matters just as much as the story behind the food.We want our customers to feel good about both.

Questions Worth Asking About Your Beef

Whether you buy beef from Royal Ranch, another local farmer, or your grocery store, we think it's worth asking a dew simple questions:
Where was this animal born and raised?
What was it fed?
Was it grass-grazed, grain-finished, or entirely forage-fed?
Where was it processed?
What does the farm mean when it uses words such as “local,” “regenerative,” or “sustainable”?
Can the people selling it explain those answers clearly?

You don't need to know everything about farming to ask these questions. And you shouldn't have to guess what a label means. We believe knowing your farmer should mean more than recognizing a logo. It should mean knowing something about the land, the animals, the people, and the decisions behind your food.
